6 Noticeable Physical Changes After You Stop Drinking Alcohol
Many people notice immediate changes in their appearance when they stop drinking alcohol. I know I saw a difference pretty quickly. It makes sense, as alcohol dulls our natural appearance and is a risk for our health. Alcohol is also a depressant which can negatively affect not only how we look but also several other systems in our bodies and our overall well-being. I get asked frequently, what were the immediate physical changes I noticed when I stopped drinking alcohol in early 2016? Here are the six things I noticed pretty quickly after I started living a alcohol free lifestyle:
This one was almost immediate. Within days of not drinking, my skin started to glow (even though it was the dead of winter!) Although I never really struggled with acne, I noticed the pimples I did have on my chin started to get smaller and eventually disappear. My skin was also softer and felt less dry. During this time, I did increase my water with lemon intake but I am positive these changes occurred also because I stopped drinking alcohol.
Again like my skin, my eyes started to glow with purpose and excitement. I would look into the mirror and it was like night and day. Alcohol is a depressant and it dehydrates us so it makes sense our eyes can also take on a dull looking appearance while we drink. My eyes looked vibrant and had a sparkle to them.
I noticed less belly bloat within a week I stopped drinking. I also noticed better digestion overall and I was also able to tolerate certain foods better than I did when I was drinking. Its funny because we often have the belief that food is the culprit to our digestive distress when it could easily be the alcohol interacting with the food we eat that can cause digestive distress.
Also after about a week, my hair started to feel softer and looked shinier. I didn’t have to use as much product in it as I did before when I was drinking.
This one was amazing because while I always found that I could easily fall asleep when I was drinking, I still found I was waking up 2-3 times throughout the night because my sleep was disrupted from drinking or I had to go to the bathroom. Now, I fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night for the most part and I wake up feeling pretty good since I got deep, REM sleep.
Better Workout Performance
Working out while hungover was never fun. Now I workout more efficiently, I can run longer, my weightlifting is better, and I can move my body freely and feel great while practicing yoga. My joints feel more flexible and my overall workout performance has greatly improved since I quit drinking.
